6. Big L - The Big Picture (2000)


Technically not a 90's album - it was released in 2000 but I figure that seeing as Big L was fatally shot in 1999, that this could qualify. For an artist that never really broke out of the underground scene, Big L managed to gain a cult following among fans, perhaps through the constant use of his music in snowboard and skate movies, and references to his lyrical skills throughout countless songs by popular artists (Eminem, Nas, GangStarr). There is a track out there that has Big L and Jay Z trading freestyle verses over a beat for over 7 minutes that sees L rip Jay Z to shreds...before anyone had ever heard of Jay. Stand out tracks on this album include Size 'Em Up, The Heist, Fall Back and Ebonics where L breaks down almost every slang term ever used by himself and other rappers.
